FAQs

Air Conditioning

  • How much does it cost to install air conditioning?

There are a number of variables when it comes to choosing the right air-conditioning system for your home or office. Give us a call on 0416 666 686 to arrange a quote.

  • What is split air conditioning?

A split air conditioning system is a unit that is made up of two parts.. There is the unit that is mounted in the wall inside your home in the particular room you want to cool or heat. Then there is the outside unit of the system which is mounted on a concrete footing or on the external wall. Split air conditioning systems are the most popular in residential houses as they are less costly to install compared to ducted air conditioning.

  • How long does it take to install air conditioning?

For a simple wall mounted split system, it can take 3-4 hours. For a ducted installation, it can take 1-3 days.

  • What is reverse cycle air conditioning?

Reverse cycle means the air conditioning system can both cool and heat your home or business. Reverse cycle units are an economical efficient way of both heating and cooling.

  • How often should i clean my air conditioner air filter?

Most spit systems have a filter light which will come on from time to time and flashes, this is the time to clean your filter.. Depending on the amount of dust and dirt in the air cleaning your filter once a season is generally sufficient. If you system is being used commercially we would strongly suggest cleaning each month.

  • What is heating mode?

Heat pump air conditioning units additionally allow the cycle described above to be reversed. A heat pump extracts “free” heat from the outdoor air and transfers the heat indoors. This principle even continues to function on very cold days with temperatures down to -5°c, -10°c or -15°c, depending on the type of air conditioning system used. Therefore, heat pump units eliminate the need for a heating system and allow you to cool the heat with the same unit, with savings in costs and energy throughout the year.

  • What size unit will I need?

There are a lot of factors taken into account when calculating the size of unit eg. area size, glass etc. Ocean Breeze recommends that you have a site visit by one of our sales experts to determine the correct size unit and type for your home or office. If site inspections are not possible then floor plans will aid in the preparation of your recommendation. Our sales representative will do a heat load calculation and also take into account the number of people occupying the area this is very important so you can save on cost and have an efficient running unit all year round.

  • What is ducted air conditioning?

A ducted air conditioning system operates from a centralised unit that pumps cool air (or warm air in winter!) throughout your house via ducts in the ceiling or floor. The advantages of a ducted system include:

    • Quieter than a split system as the central unit is located away from the ducts;

    • better temperature control - the ducted system is set up in zones that can be individually controlled for comfort and reduced energy usage throughout the house;

    • Less intrusive that a ducted system and the central unit is located in the ceiling or beneath the floor. aesthetically pleasing - ceiling or floor vents are more discreet than traditional wall-mounted units;

    • Installation of ducted air conditioning systems is more expensive than other forms of air-conditioning. An ideal time to consider installing ducted air conditioning is during a new-build or renovation of your home.

  • What is zoning of a ducted system?

Zoning allows you to turn on or off the air conditioning in certain areas of the house. This is done through the use of zone controls in the ductwork in the ceiling space. eg. Two storey home, may have two zones, zone one - for upstairs rooms and zone two - for living areas downstairs. Larger homes may have 4 or 5 zones depending on the various area of their home that they use on a frequent basis.

  • Should I have zones on my ducted air conditioning system?

In general yes, by zoning ducted air conditioning the whole system becomes more energy-efficient - you have the control to turn off the rooms or whole sections of your home that aren't being used, rather than having to cool/heat the unused spaces. At Ocean Breeze we can help you with the design of your ducted system and how to reduce energy costs accordingly.

  • During the heating cycle, there is often a white mist that comes from the air conditioners outdoor unit, what is this?

During winter, most air conditioners defrost when the outdoor temperature is below 6 degrees Celsius. This mist is normal, it is only warm water vapour being released.

  • What is cooling mode?

Air conditioning is the precise control of temperature, humidity, air flow and air cleanliness. Air conditioners regulate these elements to provide you with the environment that can meet all your lifestyle requirements.

The refrigerant is the special liquid which flows through the indoor unit to absorb the excess heat indoors. It then evaporates and is carried through narrow copper tubes to the outdoor unit as a gas, where the heat is released into the atmosphere. Thus, the gas becomes a liquid again and flows back to the indoor unit, where air is fanned over it and out into the room. This cycle is repeated until the pre-set temperature is reached.

  • What is back-to-back installation?

This applies to the installation of a split system. If the installation is back to back the indoor unit is placed on the same wall as the outdoor unit reducing the amount of pipe run required to connect the two units.

  • What are the benefits of a ducted system over a split system?

A ducted system is designed to air condition more than one room within your home. The indoor fan coil unit is situated normally in the ceiling space and is connected to the outdoor condenser unit. Outlets are then located in each room with ceiling, wall or floor grilles so conditioned air can flow throughout which is controlled by a central controller. Unlike ducted the split system, ducted air condition will heat and cool your entire house. Or just one or two zones when those zones are being used.

  • What is the operating cost?

The most energy efficient method of heating/cooling your home or office is reverse cycle air conditioning. Operating costs are determined by how long the air conditioning system runs. It is important the correct size unit is installed. An undersized unit will be significantly more expensive to run taking longer to reach the temperature desired to heat/cool effectively. As an example: the average 5hp ducted unit with a 5.7kw input would cost around 85 cents per hour to operate.

FAQs

Solar

  • How can VPP networks help solve grid issues?

A virtual power plant network helps with grid stability by enabling the distribution of excess power to homeowner batteries at rapid speed, to lower the voltage of electricity in the grid during peak times. Additionally, VPPs mean sustainable power can be generated, stored and distributed at optimal levels for the benefit of the whole community - ie more power can be stored during peak sun times for use later when demand is higher than supply.

  • What is a virtual power plant (VPP)?

A VPP is a network of residential solar battery systems that work together to form a single power plant. A VPP is a service offered by energy suppliers to harness the solar energy being collected and stored by homeowners with solar panels and battery storage.

  • How does a virtual power plant or VPP operate?

The virtual power plant, VPP, is a service provided by an energy supplier. This supplier centrally controls the network of household solar panels and solar batteries using Wi-Fi technology and software that analyses, manages, collects and distributes the available power as required. In return for an agreed amount of access to the homeowner's battery and stored power the energy supplier offers incentives and payments, for example a provider may offer an additional payment on top of the regular feed-in tariff.

  • Should I add a battery to my solar system?

As a part of our free site assessment, our team will determine whether a battery is the best option for you. Solar batteries allow you to use your own solar-generated energy to power your home at night, reduce your dependence on fossil fuels, and protect you against power outages. Even if a battery is not the right decision for you today, our solar energy installations are future-proofed and ready for the addition of a battery when you are ready in the future.

  • Is it worth investing in solar if I am at work all day?

Yes! With the price of solar systems decreasing and the increase in money the energy companies will pay you for what you don't use, now is the time to invest in your energy future. There are two ways that a professional solar system can save you money: first by providing free energy for you to use to run your appliances when you are home and the sun is shining; and, secondly, by enabling you to sell excess power back to the energy companies when you are producing more than you need or when you are not home.

  • How should I clean my solar panels?

Solar panels do need to be cleaned once or twice a year to keep them working at optimal levels. Dust and debris allowed to accumulate on the panels will reduce the amount of light the solar panels can absorb. Use soapy water and a soft brush or sponge to wipe the panels down. If it is not safe for you to do this yourself contact us at Ocean Breeze today and organise one of your team to help you out.

  • What is a feed-in tariff?

A feed-in tariff for your solar system is the rate your electricity retailer will pay you for any excess electricity produced by your solar system that is fed back into the electricity grid.

  • What are the benefits of going solar?

    • Battery technology is fast becoming more affordable: lithium-ion batteries can store solar power during the day for use at night making solar solutions even more advantageous.

    • Solar power can save you money: every kilowatt of electricity generated by your solar system reduces the cost of your energy bill.

    • Environmental benefits: solar power reduces the potential for global warming and creates sustainable, clean energy.

    • Future proof your home: homebuyers are increasingly recognising the value in buying a home with solar capability and this is likely to increase as electric cars become common on our streets.

  • Why choose solar energy?

The cost of installing solar solutions is decreasing whilst at the same time, the efficiency of the technology is always improving. In most cases, a solar solution installed today will have paid off your initial investment in around five to six years, through savings in power bills. As electric vehicles become more common on the streets, generating free electricity in your home to charge your car could become an added benefit in the future. At the same time, each of these steps helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and our dependence on fossil fuel - the ultimate goal for us all!

  • What are solar batteries?

What are solar batteries? Rechargeable solar batteries store the ‘excess’ electricity generated from a panel array, boosting energy capacity and making power available for use at night time or on cloudy days.Recent design improvements and price drops in lithium-ion batteries have made solar storage more viable than ever before.

Assess your energy needs before investing in a battery or batteries. There’s no point buying more capacity than you can use — surplus electricity should instead be fed into the grid for a profit. If all the appliances in your home are electrical, they can be powered by solar. Battery storage systems are a serious safety risk if incorrectly installed and may have implications for insurance coverage, so when choosing a solar solution make sure to use a reputable installer.

  • Do I have to clean my solar panels?

To keep your solar system working efficiently, panels will need to be cleaned from time to time. Aim to do this at least once a year, preferably twice. At the same time it is a great idea to check if any trees have grown branches that cast shade across your panels. If any components are damaged, always contact a trained professional to inspect your system.

  • What are solar inverters?

Solar inverters are an essential component of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. They are what converts the direct current (DC) output of solar panels (the energy collected from the sun) into alternating current (AC) electricity, which is what is used by the appliances in your home.

Inverters can be monitored via a computer program or device app to check energy generation, consumption and correct operation of the system. Several types of inverters are suitable for home systems.

  • Suggestions for choosing the right solar panel

Solar panels capture the energy of sunlight and convert it into electricity. This is known as a photovoltaic system, usually called solar PV. Panels come in a range of different wattages and power levels. Numerous brands are available, with new technologies and efficiencies frequently emerging. Although solar panels look similar, levels of power, quality and reliability vary greatly.

A fully-exposed rooftop is ideal for solar. Where that’s not available, make sure the panels are installed in the sunniest location. There is a standard 10-year product warranty for solar panels in Australia, as well as a 25-year performance warranty. Be aware that some manufacturers may no longer be in business one or two decades down the track should you need to make a claim.
